It was won by Boris Johnson of the Conservative Party. It was held on the same day as the London Assembly election. It was the fourth election since the office of the Mayor of London was created in 2000. Incumbent Conservative Boris Johnson was seeking re-election for a second term as Mayor. Ken Livingstone, who was Mayor between 2000 and 2008, was seeking a third, non-consecutive term as the Labour candidate, whilst Jenny Jones stood for the Green Party and Brian Paddick for the Liberal Democrats. Other candidates included independent Siobhan Benita, the UK Independence Party's Lawrence Webb (under the label 'Fresh Choice for London'), and Carlos Cortiglia of the British National Party. The latter parties won no seats in the Assembly. All registered electors (British, Irish, Commonwealth and European Union citizens) living in London who were aged 18 or over on Thursday 3 May 2012 were entitled to vote in the mayoral election. Those who were temporarily away from London (for example, away working, on holiday, in student accommodation or in hospital) were also entitled to vote in the mayoral election. The deadline to register to vote in the election was midnight on Wednesday 18 April 2012,〔The deadline for the receipt of electoral registration applications is the eleventh working day before election day.〕 though anyone who qualified as an anonymous elector had until midnight on Thursday 26 April 2012 to register.〔The deadline for the receipt and determination of anonymous electoral registration applications was the same as the publication date of the notice of alteration to the Electoral Register (i.e. the fifth working day before election day).〕 ==Background== At the 2008 mayoral election, Boris Johnson defeated incumbent mayor Ken Livingstone.
